WIB-Southern California Presents “Rare Diseases: Obstacles of Rare Disease Healthcare”

Thu, June 25, 5:30pm – 8:30pm

Barney & Barney, 9171 Towne Centre Drive, Suite 500 San Diego, CA, 92122

There are approximately 7,000 identified rare diseases affecting 25 – 35 million Americans. Since 1983, when Congress passed The Orphan Drug Act to incentivize companies to develop treatments for rare diseases, the FDA has approved 340 treatments, addressing only 5% of rare diseases identified. What has and has not changed over the past 32 years? What can we in the life sciences community do to help promote more awareness, research, and development?

WIB is putting “The Patient First.” We have assembled a panel moderated, by Linda Strause, Ph.D., an expert on clinical research and passionate advocate of rare disease research, to speak to the scientific, economic, political, and emotional realities of rare disease knowledge, funding, and advocacy. The expert panel, including a patient, physician, clinical research expert, and experienced patient advocate, promises to stimulate discussion and bring awareness to the need for solutions.
